Making Housing Affordable

Making Housing Affordable
in Los Angeles

The LA ADU Accelerator Program pairs older adults with homeowners willing to provide a stable home by offering their accessory dwelling units (ADUs) as affordable rentals. I’ve been a part of this program since its inception, and built a visual system that encourages Angelenos to become a part of this local government initiative. The core design principle in creating this collaterals has been collaboration, create warmth, and break governmental-design sterility.

ROLE
DESIGNer & researcher

As a designer and researcher, this has been the most fulfilling project I’ve been a part of. Starting from a fellow to now the lead designer on this program, I’ve worked on all possible aspects of this project. You can learn more about this project’s research phase in the Humanizing Homelessness page, and visit the program website to see the website I designed using Drupal as the platform.

About the Program
The LA ADU Accelerator Program pairs older adults with homeowners willing to provide a stable home by offering their accessory dwelling units (ADUs) as affordable rentals. In exchange, homeowners receive benefits such as qualified tenant referrals, tenant case management, and stable rental payments.

Program Impact
The LA ADU Accelerator Program was created as a part of the solution to Los Angeles’s affordable housing shortage — to leverage existing housing stock and help older adults facing housing insecurity.

By partnering with 100 homeowners to house 130 low-income older adults, the LA ADU Accelerator Program will lay the foundation for a long-term affordable housing strategy, and has the potential to scale. The program will also show homeowners that they can be pioneers in combating the housing crisis in Los Angeles, setting an example for cities around the world.

All digital assets were created on collaborative platforms, for all team members to share rights of their creation. Designing on platforms like Google Docs, Slides, and other platforms liberates us from perfection that may delay the process and make others feel ill-equipped.

Even our facebook posts were made using editable templates on google slides, for the program manager and associates to create new variations as they please.
